A View of Divination

Divination is simultaneously one of the most useful, and over-used, aspects in all of the occult. It can show us many things, such as whether or not a ritual can affect a situation, or whether someone should initiate in a path. It can reveal the true reasons behind someone's behavior, and how your week will play out. But divination can often become a crutch.

As a sorcerer, I perform divination for myself when I feel that I am being attacked and want clarity, before and after rituals to see how they went, and occasionally to get a projection of how the next few weeks will play out. Beyond this, I've found that outside of seeing signs and omens, constant divination is more of a distraction than anything else. My reason for this is, I am a magician. I make circumstances, I do not toil under them. More than that, though, life happens whether we foresee it or not. So, I simply go with the flow, adjust things as necessary, and occasionally do a bit of Divination to see what else is coming. Now, when I do perform a reading for myself, I will use several different oracles to seek confirmation and get a wider picture, so don't think that I am saying that divination is bad.

Another factor in why constant divination is typically not a useful venture is, divination does not tell the future as it is set in stone. Rather, the future is always shifting, and Divination reveals the most PROBABLE outcome as circumstances align at that present moment. So to give that a concrete example, let's use the lottery (yes, the number of questions I get about this is staggering. No, I cannot find the winning numbers for you. If I could, I would not run a business.)

Let's say that you do a reading to determine if you can win the lottery jackpot. The reading is favorable, showing signs of wealth and growth and prosperity. So you go buy a lottery ticket, and... You don't win. Not a dime. But the reading said you could?? What happened was most likely that at that exact moment, you had the highest probability of winning that you could. Unfortunately, in the time it takes you to go buy a ticket, that moment has passed and your chances have already slipped away.

I'm not saying don't use Divination. I'm saying, use it with discretion. Really contemplate if the thing you are reading on needs a Divination, or if you could just make a decision on your own.
