Spirit Home Information

Spirit homes. Ngangas. Genies in bottles. The topic of having spirits living in vessels is ancient. This is one of my favorite things to both teach about and craft for others. But what does it consist of?

DISCLAIMER: Not all spirit homes are the same. For instance, one cannot create an Nganga outside of an initiatory tradition in which they are used, such as Palo, obeah, or Quimbanda. What I'm discussing here is specifically about general spirit homes that anyone can make.

A spirit home is something that can give a local spirit a literal home, or a non local spirit a window into your life. These homes are essentially living evocations. The spirit has a direct doorway to manifest in your life, and you have a direct line of communication with them.

There is more about these items than I can cover in the scope of this post, but I can give some basics. First and foremost, you must know the spirit you want to house. If you don't know what spirit you want to work with, then you're just making a home to make a home, and this is never a good idea. A previous relationship with the spirit helps as well, but isn't totally necessary.

Then, you need to choose the home. I personally like bottles. This also segues into my next point, setting the environment. Make the home into something the spirit would be comfortable with, using colors, imagery, and anything else you can.

Then, set the stage for your spirit by providing them with tools to work with related to the purposes you're calling them for. You'll also need to add offerings to the spirit to entice them in.

Then, you'll need a heart link to the spirit. This can be pictures or necrotic material for human spirits, seals and images for demons, natural items for nature spirits, and so on. The final phase is the evocation. Call the spirit forth, and invite them in. This part cannot be forced. You can set the environment perfectly, make great sacrifices, and make a heartfelt call, but in the end, the choice is up to the spirit as to whether or not they dwell in the bottle. Give them the chance to accept or deny, or to ask for more offerings. Also, ask what offerings they'll want while they're there, and how often. This is important, as they will make your life hell if you ignore their requests. The exception to this is when you use the spirit house as a curse to bind an enemy, which I won't get into here.
